Yay yay yay! I love the simplicity of it; it looks so natural like it could have always been there! Very fun to think about what tattoo I'd get if it weren't permanent. I'd do a dashed line connecting all the freckles on my arms/torso and turn myself into a giant constellation.

"It looks so natural like it could have always been there" — I had the same thought when I saw it for the first time!! Like it was meant to be there. Also, I adore your impermanent tattoo idea and I want the same thing.

👏💗🥳 hoorah congrats I love it!! I also just got my first tattoo about a month ago! It’s a small (~1-inch square) black line tattoo on my ankle — stylized A in a heart, in memory of my sister-in-law Amber who died from cancer last May. I can relate to so many of your feelings on the occasion! And I also love my tattoo. 🫶 I’m excited to get more! But still undecided about what’s next. Pretty sure I want a big one of the Tetons with wildflowers in the foreground (like a painting by my aunt) on my upper back/shoulder blade at some point… but I think that’s a bit down the road still. Not sure what smaller tattoo I might get next..

Ahhh, congrats on your first tattoo! What a beautiful way to remember your sister-in-law. I'm so sorry for your loss. I love your ideas for more tattoos — the Tetons sounds incredible and so fitting for you! I can see you getting a rainbow maybe... :)

Ohh I love it, Maryn! Both the appearance and the motivation are so lovely.

I do not yet have any tattoos. I’ve been kicking around the idea a lot, but am still very much in indecision mode.

If they weren’t permanent, I would absolutely get a big fish (a salmon probably) in colored ink. And a moon illustration, for my maiden name I’ve always felt a bit of regret about changing. And maybe a few other cool critters, like a beetle or some of my favorite Central Park bird species. WHO knows. Maybe I still will :)

Glad it was such a good experience, and though it was more than month ago at this point, happy 30th birthday!!

Thank you so much!! I fully get that indecision mode. Tattoo decisions are tough but based on my new oodles of tattoo wisdom, when you know you know. :) I LOVE your ideas for impermanent tattoos and I really think you need to get a moon one for real! Your maiden name is too rad to leave it hanging!

So special, Maryn! What perfect vibe for such a meaningful act!

You know how some people who really don't want a tattoo say "I'd get a tiny dot" if pressed to pick *something*? Well, I have that accidentally. I jabbed myself with a fancy metal-tipped ink pen a few years ago, and have had a tiny, permanent dot on my arm since. Seems sort of fitting to be marked up by my fave writing utensil.

Thank you so much!!! That's hilarious and also poetic that you accidentally gave yourself a tattoo with your favorite pen. I love that so much. A permanent reminder of your craft!

Welcome to the club! I have an ampersand on my wrist. I really want another one, just getting up the courage to do it again and decide on what I want.

Thank you! Your ampersand tattoo sounds so lovely. I feel that! I can absolutely imagine myself getting more, but it requires a lot of courage and commitment. I'm excited to hear about what you get whenever the time comes!

My image about tattoo is “scary.” That’s because of my culture. In Japan, people who had tattoos were only Japanese mafia long time ago. Now some young people get tattoos as fashion. If you have tattoos, you can not go to the public bath or hot springs because we should be naked.

Anyway, I thought you got much bigger tattoos and also pictures. When I saw it, I’m kinda relieved. Haha

Ooh, that's so interesting! I didn't realize that was the case for tattoos in Japan. I guess I'm no longer naked. :) And yes, nothing huge for my tattoo! I'm not ready for that kind of commitment!

Bret has three daughters and two of them got tattoos, but not small or only one, kinda big and more. He and his ex told them not to have tattoos because it’s not easy to erase. The youngest one got tattoos first and when she visited her mom in Japan and her mom got really upset.

Anyway, I don’t want you to have more/bigger tattoos.
